A Kansas City Institution, Remembered and Reimagined
Tucked above Main Street in the historic Southwell Building, Harling’s Upstairs opened its doors in 1979 and quickly became more than just another Kansas City Irish bar. With creaky floorboards, fogged windows, and a deck that barely passed inspection, Harling’s was always slightly askew — and that’s exactly what made it feel right.
The Guinness flowed. The crowd was eclectic. And drinks were cheap!
A Bar Built on Community and Music
This wasn’t the kind of pub where you nursed a pint in silence. It was where stories were traded, friendships took shape, and weekend nights turned into blurry legends.
Musicians brought joy to the room — most famously Eddie Delahunt, whose sets lit the place up with Irish soul. You’d catch local blues artists on Saturdays and hear classical groups rehearsing upstairs on random weeknights. It wasn’t polished, but it was magic.
What This Website Is All About
Harling’s may have shut its doors years ago, but its legacy hasn’t gone quiet. This site is a home for that legacy — part archive, part celebration, and maybe, just maybe, a seed for what’s to come.
You’ll find photos, stories, and memories from longtime patrons. You’ll see nods to the bar’s wild St. Patrick’s Days, its live music, and the people who made it unforgettable.
We’re not just looking back — we’re inviting people to remember what made Harling’s special, and to imagine what might come next.
Could Harling’s Return in 2026?
You’ll have to stick around to find out.
